Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has approached the Bombay High Court seeking legal action against alleged defamatory posts and deepfake content that falsely linked him and members of his family to financial gains from the government’s E20 ethanol programme.
The High Court has granted Nitin Gadkari permission to file a civil suit against Meta, other social media platforms and unidentified individuals or entities allegedly responsible for hosting or circulating the disputed material.
The development comes amid increasing legal scrutiny over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create manipulated digital content capable of spreading misinformation and damaging reputations.
According to the petition, the allegedly fabricated content falsely suggested that Nitin Gadkari and his family had profited from the government’s ethanol blending initiative. The Union Minister has denied the allegations and contends that the material is defamatory and misleading.
As one of the government’s strongest advocates of ethanol blending, Nitin Gadkari has consistently promoted the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil and lowering vehicle emissions. The alleged deepfake content, according to the petition, seeks to tarnish his reputation by associating him with unverified financial allegations.
The proceedings before the Bombay High Court began with a leave petition under Clause XII of the Letters Patent. This is a procedural requirement that allows the Court to entertain a civil suit when only a part of the cause of action has arisen within its territorial jurisdiction. Granting leave enables the plaintiff to institute the suit before the High Court despite certain events connected to the dispute occurring outside Mumbai.
The case is expected to examine the responsibilities of social media platforms in addressing allegedly defamatory and AI-generated content, particularly where unidentified users are involved. It may also contribute to the evolving legal framework governing deepfakes, intermediary liability and online reputation in India.
