The Supreme Court has directed the Calcutta High Court to decide within a week on Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s request to travel abroad for medical treatment.
The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Calcutta High Court to decide within one week the plea filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee, who has sought permission to travel overseas for specialised eye treatment.
The matter relates to Banerjee’s request to leave the country for medical care. Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had declined to grant him immediate relief. Instead, it directed that his eye condition should first be evaluated by a hospital in Kolkata to determine whether the required treatment could be provided within India.
Hearing the matter, the Supreme Court asked the High Court to dispose of Banerjee’s application expeditiously within a week. The apex court did not decide the merits of the plea but emphasised the need for an early decision considering the nature of the request.
The case concerns judicial permission for foreign travel while legal proceedings are pending. The High Court is now expected to examine the medical evidence and determine whether treatment abroad is necessary or whether adequate medical facilities are available within the country.
