Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abhishek Porel has been arrested in Hooghly following allegations by a medical student, with the Calcutta High Court monitoring the case.
Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel has been arrested in connection with a criminal case arising from allegations of rape, assault and criminal intimidation made by a medical student. The allegations relate to an alleged relationship in which the complainant claims that Porel established a physical relationship with her after promising to marry her.
The case has now attracted the attention of the Calcutta High Court, which has been monitoring the investigation following the complainant’s allegations of police inaction. The matter has been deferred for further consideration, with the next date stated to be September 14.
According to reports, the complaint was lodged at Mogra Police Station in Hooghly district. The complainant, a third-year medical student, alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel and that he had made assurances regarding marriage. She has further alleged that the relationship subsequently turned abusive and that she faced threats and intimidation.
The allegations also include claims concerning private photographs and videos. The Calcutta High Court had earlier directed the police to take steps to apprehend Porel and another accused and to seize electronic devices that could allegedly contain intimate material. The court’s direction was aimed, among other things, at preventing the dissemination of such material.
Police had reportedly recovered a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination as part of the investigation. The High Court had also sought a report from the police regarding the steps taken in the case.
The allegations made by the complainant are serious, but they remain allegations at this stage. An arrest does not amount to a finding of guilt, and the prosecution will have to establish its case in accordance with law. Porel has denied the allegations against him.
The case also highlights the importance of protecting the privacy and dignity of complainants in sexual-offence proceedings. The identity of the woman has not been disclosed in reports, consistent with the legal requirement to protect the identity of victims of sexual offences.
Porel’s arrest has generated considerable attention because of his profile as a professional cricketer. He represents Bengal in domestic cricket and has played for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. His cricketing career, however, remains separate from the judicial process, and the allegations must ultimately be tested through investigation and legal proceedings.
The case comes at a time when courts are increasingly dealing with allegations involving digital evidence, including private photographs, videos and electronic communications. Where such material forms part of an investigation, the preservation and handling of electronic devices can become an important aspect of the proceedings.
