The Central government has officially constituted a team of Special Public Prosecutors (SPPs), led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, to conduct the crucial prosecution in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case, commonly known as the 26/11 case.

This development was confirmed through a formal notification, marking a renewed push by the Indian government to ensure justice is served in one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in India’s history. The newly formed legal team will coordinate with investigating agencies and assist in fast-tracking the judicial process related to the case, which has seen prolonged delays, especially concerning the accused who remain in Pakistan.

The legal team will focus on key aspects, including presenting evidence compiled over the years and navigating complex diplomatic and legal challenges linked to cross-border terrorism.

The Centre’s decision to appoint the Solicitor General himself underscores the high-level priority the government places on the case. The 26/11 attacks, which resulted in 166 deaths and over 300 injuries, drew widespread global condemnation and exposed serious lapses in intelligence and coordination.

A renewed prosecutorial strategy is expected to strengthen India’s diplomatic stance, particularly in its efforts to pressure Pakistan to take meaningful action against the masterminds still at large.

Internal observers and legal analysts have applauded the move, suggesting it could reinvigorate public confidence in the judicial process and the government’s commitment to counter-terrorism.
