Attorney General KK Venugopal refuses to give consent to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Kapil Sibbal.

Supreme Court advocate Vineet Jindal has demanded consent from Attorney General of India K.K Venugopal and has demanded court proceedings against noted lawyer Kapil Sibbal for his alleged statement made at a peoples’ tribunal which was held on August 6, where it is said that while taking part in a discussion here called ‘Judicial roll -back of Civil Liberties ‘ he had criticised Supreme Court’s clean chit to the then Chief Minister of Gujrat and now Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for his alleged involvement in 2002 Gujrat riot’s.

Zakia Jaffery, wife of Former Member of Parliament Ehsan jaffery’s had challenged the clean chit. In course of discussion, top court lawyer is also said to have had also derided the top court’s verdict in which Zakia Jaffery , the wife of slain Ahsan jaffery’s petition challenged  SIT’s role in the entire affair .
Sibbal had criticized the top court’s verdict dismissing Zakia Jafri’s plea challenging the SIT’s clean chit to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other state functionaries in the 2002 post-Godhra riots. He had also questioned the top court’s verdict upholding the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act that gave wider powers to the Enforcement Directorate.
Attorney General of India K.K Venugopal is said to have refused to give his consent for initiating contempt of court proceedings against Sibbal, saying “ No part of the statements cast any blame or aspersion upon the (top) court.” He even said that Sibbal’s statements were not intended to scandalize the court or put a slur on the confidence of the public in the institution.”
