Rahul Gandhi is granted bail by a UP court in a defamation complaint brought by a BJP leader over comments he made about HM Amit Shah

A municipal court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday in connection with a defamation case brought by a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against him for comments he reportedly made in 2018 about Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Gandhi’s lawsuit was purportedly brought by BJP leader Vijay Mishra in response to some statements Gandhi made during the Karnataka legislative assembly campaign. Amit Shah, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Union Home Minister, was purportedly referred to in the in-question remarks as a “murder accused.”

According to reports, Gandhi stated that the BJP had a party president who was “accused” in a murder case, even though the party claimed to have clean politics. At the time, Shah was the president of the BJP. Gandhi was referring to the 2014 Sohrabuddin encounter case, in which a Special CBI court cleared Amit Shah.

It is said that Mishra expressed dissatisfaction over the “objectionable comments” that damaged the Home Minister’s reputation. Gandhi reportedly entered a plea of innocence when he appeared before the trial court this morning in relation to the matter. The trial court then approved his bail release.
