Your demands are ever increasing: SC issues notice On SCBA plea for use of land for constructing chambers

While refusing to consider a plea filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association which sought direction from the Top Court as to how to use the piece of land for constructing a lawyers’ chamber after the Foreign Correspondents’ Club which is now opposite the Supreme Court was relocated to another place, a Supreme Court Bench which consisted of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat in their ruling said, ” Bar Association’s demand for constructing chamber was ever increasing “. The Top Court Judges’ Bench also contended that as the land on which the chamber is proposed was public property and could not be passed on from generation to generation, so one should object to alloting the land to SCBA (Supreme Court Bar Association for building chambers for the lawyers. These chambers cannot remain with a particular judge for a long time. as it was public property. In his ruling, Top court justice Bhatt said, ” Court could not delve into others’ property rights.”
While saying whether he as well as Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit possess a particular chamber, the top court asked “Did me and CJI Lalit have chambers?
Remarkably, Senior Advocate Vikas Singh while appearing for the Bar Association had urged the Top Court Bench to cap the number of lawyers who were practicing in the Apex Court.
In an interesting note, the Chief Justice remarked “You will have this 1.33 acres you can build as many chambers as you want”.
