KK Venugopal is these days in news in legal circles when in course of a hearing over tussle between the Delhi Government and the Lieutenant General Governor over control of power in the national capital , when he said before a Constitution Bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud, MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha that his tenure was only up to September 30. However, he tried to lighten the atm”There is a little problem. My tenure is only upto September 30″ Venugopal said.
You don’t under -estimate the powers of this Court under Article 142″, Justice Chandrachud told the AG in a lighter vein, suggesting that the Court can nevertheless require his assistance in the matter by exercising special powers. At this , Solicitor General Tushar Mehta joined the conversation with a lighter vein remark, “I can be the petitioner for that”.
While appreciating Venugopal’s work, the union Government on June 29, this year had extended his term by three more months . There are reports that Venugopal had requested not to further extend his tenure describing his health problems , however, the Government requested him to continue for three more months.
Venugopal who is known as a constitutional law expert, was appointed AG on July 1, 2017 for a three year term, after the resignation of then AG Mukul Rohatgi and was given extension of one year each in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
