No Jeans, Corduroy Pants, or Sports Shoes in Court: K’taka State Bar Council

The Karnataka State Bar Council has noticed that numerous young attorneys frequently appear in court in jeans, corduroy pants, sports shoes, and similar attire. The Bar Council of India has established a dress code for attorneys, male and female.

According to Bar Council of India guidelines, attorneys are not permitted to appear in court wearing jeans, corduroy pants, sports shoes, or similar attire. Accordingly, attorneys are required to adhere to the established dress code. The Karnataka State Bar Council would take any infringement of the same seriously.

Every profession has a certain dress code, and members of that profession can be identified by their clothing. As with lawyers’ attire, the dress code is a sign of professionalism, discipline, and self-assurance.

According to the Advocates Act of 1961, which governs the Bar Council of India Rules, every lawyer in India must wear a black robe or coat with a white shirt and a white neckband.

Part VI, Chapter IV of the Bar Council of India Rules, Section 49(1)(gg) of the Advocates Act of 1961. According to the climatic circumstances, it states “the form of garments or robes to be worn by advocates, standing before any court or tribunal.”

The dress code for attorneys appearing before the Supreme Court, High Court, lower courts, tribunals, or authorities is governed by Section 49 of the aforementioned Rules, which is included in Chapter IV, Form of Dresses or Gowns to be Worn by Advocates. They must wear the items listed as part of their attire, which should be formal and respectable.
