My Primary Objective Will Be Listing And Disposing Long-Pending Cases: Chief Justice Lalit

Over 16,000 cases were listed while almost 4,000 were cleared by SC within first 12 days of newly appointed CJI Lalit’s tenure. Only as Chief Justice , Supreme Court has disposed off About 4,000 cases . Here’s a report card on the cases listed and closed by the Apex Court from August 29 to September 14.

Newly appointed Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit in his candid confession revealed that in course of his shortest ever tenure of 74 days as Chief Justice of India, his primary objective will be on listing and disposing of long-pending cases as doing so will reduce the massive backlog and piles of cases which had multiplied during the Covid-19 pandemic.

CJI said among these cases will be fresh ones which are listed either for admission or those ones where notices have been issued. Such cases also usually include older appeals that are awaiting their final hearing.

On the eve of taking oath, CJI Lalit had made three important announcements regarding his plan for revamping the top court’s functioning during his short tenure. He promised that the process of listing cases would become simpler and more transparent, that a clear-cut regime is slated to be put in place regarding the mentioning of urgent cases, and at least one Constitution bench would sit during the entire year.
